Course Overview

The London Marathon is a monumental point-to-point road race and the historic benchmark for mass marathon participation. Certified by Guinness World Records as the largest marathon in the world following the 2025 edition, the race takes runners on an iconic journey from Blackheath, through the heart of the city, to a royal finish at Buckingham Palace.

Taking place in late April, the race generally benefits from classic British spring weather. Historical data points to a comfortable 13.6 degrees Celsius at the 09:35 AM mass start, rising gradually to an afternoon high of around 16.8 degrees. These mild conditions, paired with overcast skies and light breezes, are well suited to sustaining long-distance running efforts.

The London Marathon (Blue Start) Course

To ease early congestion across the massive field, the course uses separate color-coded starting areas. This guide follows the Blue start, which merges with the Pink route early on before fully converging with the Red start near the 4.5-kilometer mark in Woolwich. This major merge creates noticeable pinch points where positioning, patience, and spatial awareness are essential for maintaining your rhythm.

Topographically, the course is fast and forgiving, with nearly 85 percent of the terrain classified as Flat. A gentle net downhill profile is established early through a sequence of Minor Decline and Moderate Decline segments that carry runners down into the Woolwich merge. Later, the winding sections through the Isle of Dogs introduce brief Minor Incline variances, but the final 10-kilometer stretch along the Victoria Embankment is resolutely Flat, setting the stage for a strong, unbroken finish.

Course Briefing

Km 0.0 to 10.8 - The Blue Start, Woolwich Merge, and Cutty Sark

The race begins at the Blue start in Blackheath, with a mass start at 09:35 AM. The opening kilometers offer smooth, level ground that feels effortless underfoot, giving you time to warm up your legs and take in the electric atmosphere of the starting crowds.

Just past the 4-kilometer mark, the course shifts noticeably as a prolonged, steady descent carries you quickly down into the Woolwich area. At 4.5 kilometers, the Blue and Red routes converge, funneling tens of thousands of runners into what is historically a tight stretch of road. Exiting the Woolwich roundabout, the ground levels out again as the course heads steadily westward toward Greenwich, where the towering masts of the iconic Cutty Sark and the roar of the spectator crowds await.

Key Challenges

  • Pacing the Early Descent: The 1.48-kilometer downhill stretch starting at km 3.77 feels fast and inviting. Control your speed and lean back slightly to protect your quads for the later miles.
  • Woolwich Congestion: The Red and Blue start merge at 4.5 kilometers creates significant pinch points. Stay calm, avoid weaving, and adapt your pace to the crowd density until the pack thins out.

Km 10.8 to 20.0 - Rotherhithe, Jamaica Road, and Tower Bridge

Leaving the soaring energy of Greenwich, the course traces the contours of the River Thames as it winds through Rotherhithe and Bermondsey. This entire stretch is overwhelmingly level, offering a surface that feels perfectly flat and an excellent opportunity to lock into your target marathon pace.

The route weaves along Salter Road and Jamaica Road, characterized by long straightaways that reward consistent, rhythmic running. Without hills to break your stride, your primary focus should be on maintaining your fueling schedule and staying relaxed.

As this section draws to a close, a very subtle rise signals your approach to Tower Bridge, pulling you toward the halfway mark and one of the most unforgettable acoustic experiences in global distance running.

Key Challenges

  • Maintaining Focus on the Flats: With nearly 10 kilometers of uninterrupted, flat terrain, it can be easy to lose concentration. Use the straightaways on Jamaica Road to settle into a sustainable, rhythmic pace and stay on top of your fueling.

Km 20.0 to 31.0 - The Highway, Isle of Dogs, and Canary Wharf

After crossing Tower Bridge, the course turns sharply onto The Highway before plunging into the dense, modern architecture of the Isle of Dogs and Canary Wharf.

This section is arguably the most complex part of the route. The high number of twists, turns, and tight corners demands active mental engagement, and this is especially true given that GPS signals often falter among the towering skyscrapers.

While the ground remains predominantly level, you will encounter subtle undulations throughout the Docklands. A quick, sharp drop appears just past 24 kilometers, giving your legs a momentary jolt. Later, at 30.7 kilometers, a brief but strenuous climb out of Charter Street awaits. This steady uphill stretch will raise your heart rate and test your legs at a point when the cumulative fatigue of the marathon is beginning to set in.

Key Challenges

  • Navigating the Turns: Canary Wharf features numerous directional changes and tight corners. Run the tangents where possible to avoid covering extra distance.
  • The Charter Street Climb: At 30.7 kilometers, a brief but strenuous uphill rise will test your legs just as the dreaded marathon wall approaches. Shorten your stride, pump your arms, and push over the crest.

Significant Climbs

  • Climb #1: Km 30.7 to Km 30.87, 0.17 km, avg grade 4.22%, total gain 7.01 m

Km 31.0 to 42.11 - Embankment, Big Ben, and the Royal Finish

Leaving Canary Wharf, the route heads westward along Poplar High Street and Commercial Road before rejoining The Highway for the final push back toward central London. At 36.95 kilometers, a gentle downhill on Byward Street leads onto the Victoria Embankment.

From here to the finish, the road is entirely flat, offering no natural topographical relief — just a straight test of endurance. These closing kilometers also happen to be among the most visually striking of the entire course. Cleopatra's Needle lines the route, the London Eye comes into view across the river, and the iconic silhouette of Big Ben draws you forward.

A right turn onto Birdcage Walk brings a wall of sound as the spectator crowds grow dense and loud. One final turn onto The Mall presents a straight, open run to the finish line, set against the grand gates of Buckingham Palace ahead.

Key Challenges

  • The Final 10K Push: With the terrain remaining entirely level, there are no natural breaks to rest your legs. Rely on the massive spectator energy along the Embankment to carry you through the final miles.
  • Managing the Byward Street Drop: A brief but sharp downward slope at 36.95 kilometers can jar tired legs. Keep your stride smooth and controlled before flattening out on the Embankment.

Significant Climbs

  • None.
